"Solomon's Folly"
by Rev. Lorraine D. Coconato
January 6, 2004

A well known fact is that King Solomon, successor to King David, the man after God's own heart, was a man of great wisdom. In a dream, the Lord asked Solomon, "Ask! What shall I give you?" (1 Kings 3: 5b) Solomon's answer was surprising, as he did not ask for riches, long life, deliverance from his enemies, but he asked for, "...an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil." (1 Kings 3: 9). Benevolently, the Lord God granted his petition and gave him great wisdom and understanding, "...so that there has not been anyone like him" before or after that time!

Because he was a man who was faithful to the statutes of his father, David, and the Lord, Himself, the Lord added riches and honor to Solomon's life, so that he would be the grandest king of all time! Yet, the stipulation and standard set by the Lord was that Solomon was to walk in obedience and submission to the Word of God and the commandments of the Lord!

Solomon, mighty, wise, rich, famous, lived a life like a celebrity of his day! There was no lack in his life, house, family, ministry! He had it all! But, he had a great weakness that eventually caused him to stumble in horrific measure! He loved women! He married many pagan (unbelievers, those who are not faithful and submitted to the Living God!) wives, who seduced his mind, his body and his ways!

Here was a man who built a glorious dwelling place for the Lord! Here was a man knew the Lord, knew His goodness, knew His mightiness, knew His faithfulness, yet, the lust of the flesh reigned in his life, causing him to succumb to eventual deception and making his great wisdom appear to be folly! With all his great gifts and wisdom, he fell prey to gross idolatry and followed the idols of his cunning wives!

How much more must we be circumspect in these days, refusing to be enticed by the seductions of the day and the manipulations of the prince of darkness?

Lord, keep a guard over our eyes, and a secure hold upon our hearts! The spirit of adultery is prevalent, the spirit of Anti-Christ is rearing it's ugly head in many dimensions and forms! Jesus, keep our eyes, minds and hearts fixed upon You, as we seek to live our days in divine alignment and keep our hearts in purity and goodness all the days of our lives in Jesus Name, Amen!
