"Going for the Gold!"

Exodus 32: 2-4, "And Aaron said to them, "Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me." So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashinoned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf. They they said, "This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt."
We are gold-seekers! We seek after the finest things in life, the most sumptious food, the most extravagant vacations, the sleekest cars and all the grandeur that this age affords! With the accleration of technology, almost any luxury can be at your fingertips within seconds, minutes and most assuredly, overnight via express mail!
With all these accessories of life so available to us, how have we, the Body of Christ, stewarded our world, so as to avoid the vacuum of the materialistic consumption? Rather poorly, I declare!
The Lord loves to lavish His children with love, blessings, protection, fruitfulness and joy! There is no lack in the inventory of His heart of these benefits! Yet, are we ever satisfied with that which the Sovereign Lord has bestowed upon us or are we ever-yearning for more trinkets, toys and the like!
This Exodus passage is quite evidenced in the Church of today! A psunami of "prosperity teaching" over the past few decades has increased the incidence of greed, extortion and covetousness in the Church. Is the sin proportionate to the flood of teachings over these last many years? Only God knows!
The Lord is speaking that it is His will for us to "go for the gold!" No, not the golden baubles that dazzle the world and hang from the necks of the "rich and famous," But the riches that do not perish and cannot be stolen by thieves! "But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6: 20, 21)
Am I saying, "sell all your valuables and follow Him!" No! That is for God to instruct each believer as they seek Him diligently! But, what I am saying and I believe the Spirit of the Lord is saying is "that which perishes is not gold but that which endures and brings fruitfulness unto eternity, these things are golden, priceless and worthy of pursuit!" 1 Peter 1: 7-8 says it best, "That the genuineness of your faith being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory."
Father, perfect your Church! As a House, gut us, renovate us and restore us to Your Word and your heart! Deliver us from the zeal for worldly gold and riches and help us to pan for "gold," the true gold that endures; souls that need a Savior! Thank You, Lord, for embedding Your treasures in our hearts that we might be treasure-houses of heavenly blessings, distributing the wisdom of the Pearl of Great Price to a poor and needy world in Jesus Name, Amen!
